About Us
We opened Anatolia – Tribal Rugs & Weavings in 1981, selling the carpets and kilims we found throughout Turkey. However, since 1990, and the the fall of the Soviet Union, we have able to purchase antique and semi-antique carpets, kilims, sumaks, and various other woven items from Central Asia, Azerbaijan, Armenia, Daghestan, Iran, and Eastern Europe. We also buy old carpets directly from Afghanistan, as well as new carpets, woven with the finest Afghan wools and natural dyes.
Everything we sell is hand-woven. Older items, and most new ones, were made by women in their village homes, working without patterns to weave one-of-a-kind creations. From the beginning, we have tried to pick the most interesting weavings we could find at reasonable prices, and to sell them based on what we’ve paid. This has helped to create a continuous turnover of inventory in our shop.
If there is a style of carpet or kilim you are interested in, we will be happy to search our inventory for you, and send pictures.
We have been buying and selling carpets and kilims for over thirty-five years, and try to be as conservatively accurate as possible about dating what we sell, as well as determining provenance.
Our carpets have been showcased over the years. We were winners of the Hudson Valley Magazine’s “Best Carpets” award for 2006, and can be seen in the October, 2008 issue of Country Home magazine, on pages 68-71, with our store referenced on page 120. They are also shown on the Hotel Mountain Brook website (HotelMountainBrook.com), where they decorate many of the rooms. |
